Research at the Mabo Centre
Our research program is responsive to both immediate policy issues and supporting long term systemic change within the native title sector.
We are currently generating data and providing policy support for a range of immediate issues, including critical minerals, native title compensation, future act reform, and data centre impacts on Traditional Owner rights.
Application of Free, Prior and Informed Consent
Our major research project focuses on the application of the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).
To support self-determined, economically empowered First Nations communities, the principle of FPIC must become embedded in the ways that industry negotiates, government develops policy, and the legal system interprets its obligations.
This project will undertake a comprehensive research program examining the ways in which the application of FPIC can be used to protect the social, cultural, and economic interests of First Nations communities.
Agreements, Treaties and Negotiated Settlements database redevelopment
The redevelopment of the existing Agreements, Treaties and Negotiated Settlements (ATNS) database allows for improved access for small to medium sized Traditional Owner corporations, and supports greater engagement with available resources and tools.
This project is being undertaken in partnership with Terri Janke and Company and Melbourne Database Analytics Platform.
Eminent Visiting Fellow program
Our Eminent Visiting Fellow program brings together Indigenous leaders, established and emerging First Nations researchers and policy practitioners, whose work focuses on First Nations economic empowerment.
Supported by our academic partner the University of Melbourne, the Fellowship provides a platform for senior Traditional Owners and First Nations leaders, academics, and scholars to help shape the economic future of Australian First Nations communities and create change through research outcomes.
