The Mabo Centre, in partnership with the National Native Title Council (NNTC) and Aboriginal Enterprises in Mining, Energy and Exploration (AEMEE), invites you to discuss First Nations rights, equity, and leadership in critical minerals projects at Towards an Australian First Nations Critical Minerals Strategy.
Australia is a key producer of several critical minerals likely to play a central role in the energy transition away from fossil fuels. Essential to manufacturing wind turbines, electric vehicles, solar panels, rechargeable batteries, and with tech and medical applications, global demand for critical minerals is expected to double by 2030.
With global demand surging, strong international interest in Australian critical mineral assets, and $1.2billion in Federal funds to create a Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve, there is an urgent need to ensure First Nations interests are not left behind in the new mining boom.
While it acknowledges benefit sharing with First Nations communities, the Australian government’s existing Critical Minerals Strategy currently sets no requirement for engaging with Traditional Owners in the development of critical minerals on their land.
This is your opportunity to work in collaboration with Traditional Owners, government, miners and producers to develop a First Nations strategy framework to ensure the rights and interests of First Nations communities are understood and respected, and the benefits of a growing critical mineral mining industry flow to First Nations communities.
If you are unable to attend in person, the symposium will also be livestreamed.
